Rio de Janeiro will host the 22nd Conference of the International Observatory of Participatory Democracy

Rio de Janeiro will host the 22nd Conference of the OIDP, – Observatório Internacional Democracia Participativa, on the 6th and 8th of November, in Cidade das Artes. The Conference, organized in partnership with the Special Coordination of International Relations and Cooperation of the City of Rio, will bring together representatives of municipalities from more than 47 countries around the world. They are managers from Brazilian and foreign cities, politicians, academics, activists, government officials and international organizations, who will debate and exchange experiences about more transparent, more inclusive and more diverse cities.

Representatives from Germany, Argentina, Iran, Syria, Spain, France, Turkey, Russia and the United States confirmed their presence at the OIDP meeting. The network links more than 1,000 cities around the world. Through OIDP, municipalities and local and regional governments, civil society organizations and research centers join together to develop, implement and disseminate experiences on participatory and deliberative democracy, with the aim of international cooperation and solidarity.

The opening of the event will be attended by the Mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes, who is president of the OIPD, Márcio Macedo, chief minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil, and of Eric Piolle, Mayor of Grenoble and co-president of the IOPD.

On the first day of the event, the 2nd edition of the Mapa da Mulher Carioca will be launched, which investigates areas and attributes linked to the performance of public administration, seeking to assist in the formulation of public policies. The work maps the needs of women in the city of Rio, by surveying a series of indicators that make it possible to compare data and verify differences and inequalities between genders, races, generations and territories in the municipality.

At the end of the conference, representatives prepare a declaration that establishes commitments from all participating cities. The manifesto is presented to federal and municipal bodies, with the aim of sharing innovations on the state of participatory democracy. OIDP is a space for dialogue and an opportunity to promote cooperation between cities and international organizations. The OIDP is part of the global organization United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and was born in 2001, formalized at the 1st annual OIDP Conference, in Barcelona.
