Rio de Janeiro receives 21 nominations for the Oscar for International Tourism

At the Cinema Oscar, Brazil went blank, but this will not be repeated in the World Travel Awards South America 2024, known as the “Oscars of Tourism”. Rio de Janeiro, a city that brings together environmental, architectural and cultural riches, is a finalist in no less than 21 categories in this international competition.

The news comes just days after the city's name dominated the internet and headlines with the leak of information that Copacabana Beach will host what promises to be the biggest show of singer Madonna's career.

The unbeatable Christ the Redeemer

Among those nominated, the iconic Christ the Redeemer, already recognized as one of the “Seven Wonders of the Modern World”, is in the running for best tourist attraction.

“In addition to the natural attractions and rich culture, our city has a tourist infrastructure with high quality standards, combined with unique hospitality. The indications confirm that we are on the right path to position Rio increasingly on the tourist route and attract investment”, highlights Carlos Werneck, executive president of Visit Rio.

Galeão International Airport, much criticized and underused, surprises by standing out in the competition for the best airport for the second time. Pier Mauá also competes as the best cruise port, as does Riocentro, as a venue for conventions. While Cariocas are surprised by these indications, others are recognized by residents as international icons, such as the Hotel Belmond Copacabana Palace. In other categories, in the hotel chain, the neighboring Pestana and Fasano, also in Ipanema, which, by the way, has just been nominated as the second best beach in the world .

Ten-time champion

The city is a strong candidate to win the award for best destination for international competitions for the tenth time. In 2023 alone, 53 events were held, responsible for injecting US$176 million into the Rio economy. This year, the Rio Open inaugurated the calendar, which also includes the Rio de Janeiro Marathon , The International Half Marathon of Rio, the L'Étape Rio by Tour de France, the Bimbo Global Race and the Asics Golden Run , between others.

“In recent years, we have identified the need to intensify work in the search for new markets and we have detected great potential in the sports segment, due to the outdoor activities that the city offers, in addition to the Olympic legacy, which makes it possible to hold events in this sector ”, says Werneck.
