Rio de Janeiro celebrates 10 years as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

This Friday, (01/07), is celebrated 10 years since the Rio de Janeiro was classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, in the category Urban Cultural Landscape. Rio was the first city in the world to obtain such a classification, recognizing its beauty and richness in the combination of natural and cultural elements of Rio's landscape.

The classified area includes several sites in the South zone of the city, such as the Flamengo Park, Sugarloaf Mountain, Copacabana Beach and sectors of Tijuca Forest, including the Serra da Carioca, where the Christ the Redeemer.

The application titled Rio de Janeiro: Carioca Landscapes between the mountains and the sea, was presented in 2009 by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN) and was approved on July 1, 2012, in Session of the World Heritage Committee in Saint Petersburg, at Russia.

An international recognition of great importance that shows how Rio de Janeiro is a very special place on the planet.
