Occupancy on the rise, resumption of international flights, busy events calendar: a review of the sector in 2023

The Top Hotel RJ 2023 Award ceremony was the setting for the vice-president of HotéisRIO, José Domingo Bouzon, and the president of ABIH-RJ, Paulo Michel, to take stock of the sector in 2023. Topics such as increased demand , hotel occupancy growing continuously and good performance of tourist destinations in the interior of Rio de Janeiro were addressed.

Bouzon recalled that, if 2022 was a year of recovery, 2023 was a year of consolidation. “We recorded sustainable growth in occupancy, the resumption of flights, the reinforcement of the promotional agenda and a variety of international shows that moved the city. However, we still face some challenges in the area of security which, with the commitment of public authorities and the efforts of the State Government, we hope to overcome soon”, he pointed out.

He also celebrated the rescue of two initiatives much loved by the locals: the Waiter Race, which tests the skills of professionals, and the Christmas decoration competition between hotels.

The president of ABIH-RJ, Paulo Michel, highlighted the strength of the hotel sector in Rio de Janeiro, which demonstrated, in 2023, its ability to innovate and attract more tourists. He highlighted that destinations in Rio de Janeiro recorded continuous increases in demand, the result of long-term work that has been developed by all players involved in the sector.

“Through meetings and dialogue with public bodies, we promote training and exchange of experiences. There were many working meetings with tourism representatives, at municipal and state levels, to improve the growth conditions of our sector. We celebrated the return of Abav and also participated in Expo Rio Turismo, which showcased our businesses and tourist destinations,” he said. He praised the work being developed by Setur RJ in promoting the state among the main issuing markets.

Paulo Michel thanked the ABIH-RJ team, which is omnipresent on various fronts and regions, always defending the interests of our members. “This award is an example of this dedication. An opportunity for businesses from across the state to present their good practices. The fact that we had a record number of participants in this edition, with 19 projects from 16 enterprises, proves that we are on the right path.”
