Rio can have a free international megashow annually; Paes wants U2 in 2025

The historic show Madonna at the Rio de Janeiro, last Saturday (04/05), which took around 1.6 million people to Copacabana beach and it was news around the world, including being highlighted by the renowned North American newspaper ”The New York Times”, created the intention of the Rio City Hall to have an artist of this caliber in the capital of Rio de Janeiro performing for free to the population every year.

The announcement was made by Mayor Eduardo Paes himself last Monday (05/06), at the Museum of Tomorrow, during an event that released the official summary of the event led by the “Queen of Pop”.

“We're going to make every first Saturday in May a kind of 'day of celebration'. If you want, it could be 'Celebration May'. I think it’s good to use the foreign name, because Rio is international”, said the head of the Rio Executive Branch.

Going further, Paes mentioned some names that could come to Rio in 2025 for the event, but made his preference clear: the Irish rock band U2, led by Bono Vox.

“There are a lot of people asking for Beyoncé, the Michael Jackson show that is in Las Vegas with a hologram… There are all kinds of requests, strong pressure. But, I want to express that my lobby will be for U2. The fact is that Rio is open to receive, with funding from the public authorities if necessary, because the gain for the city is very large”, he concluded.

It is worth mentioning that, according to data released by the Government of RJ, the Madonna's megashow generated more than R$ 300 million to the state's economy.
