Hotel industry in Rio de Janeiro expects growth due to international and sporting events during 2024

Rio de Janeiro begins the year 2024 with great prospects for the tourism sector, driven by international and sporting events that promise to attract visitors from all over the world. Highlights include the G20 meeting, which will transform the city into the group's capital during the heads of state summit scheduled for November 18th and 19th, and the prestigious Rio Tennis Open, which runs until February 25th. at the Brazilian Jockey Club.

Throughout the year, several events related to the G20 will take place in the city, covering topics ranging from climate action financing to the reform of international institutions. The first in-person meeting, the Ministerial Meeting of Chancellors, is scheduled for the 21st and 22nd of February, at Marina da Glória.

The Rio Open Tennis, which became the first ATP World Tour 500 in Brazilian history, shakes up the Rio courts with high-level competition. The event not only provides quality sports entertainment, but also boosts several sectors of the local economy, from hotels and restaurants to entertainment and transportation segments.

According to Alfredo Lopes, president of HotéisRIO, the intense program is a reward for the efforts of the tourism sector to make Rio de Janeiro an attractive destination for events. “A solid calendar of events is essential for tourism in general and for hotel activity in particular. It boosts commerce, shopping malls, bars and restaurants and increases tax collection, which represents new investments in the city”, highlights Lopes.
